Nikitskaya Bordovaya is a very cold-hardy hybrid persimmon. It's cold-hardy and will survive in exposure around -10 degrees. It's an astringent persimmon, tastier, sweeter, and juicier than most American persimmon. The flavorful texture of the Nikitskaya Bordovaya persimmon is like an egg custard or like a ripe aromatic soft peach. Its easy to tell when this persimmon is dead ripe, it falls off of the tree.
As mentioned, the fruit from the Nikitskaya Bordovaya persimmon tree is astringent until it is fully ripe much like its parent varieties, the American persimmon, Diospyrous virginiana; and the ripe stage color is orange-red and very sweet, inheritance from the Asian persimmon parentage Diospyrous kaki. The ripened fruit can be 2-3 inches with a rather flattened shape that is attached to the twigs on the trees in large clusters when first formed, but thinning the fruit on the branches will increase the fruit’s size
Nikitskaya Bordovaya has waxy, bright green leaves which cover the tree completely to provide shade for the newly forming fruit, and the leaves turn brilliantly red in the fall to reveal a spectacular glowing landscape specimen after the first fall frost. Agood choice for backyard persimmon. Also referenced as Nikitas Gift Persimmon. Often only around 6 to 10 ft. depending on soil and climate.
