King of Tompkins apple tree was brought from New Jersey to New York in 1804 by Jacob Wycoff. Grown in Tompkins County, New York, and called the King of apples, for size and flavor. The King of Tompkins was fourth most popular New York apple in early 1900's. The King of Tompkins apples are large to very large. Skin smooth, golden washed with orange red, yellow fleshed, coarse, crisp, tender, flavor subacid. King of Tompkins apples are also good for cooking when green and excellent for eating when handsomely striped. Water core (translucent flesh) sweetens some fruit.
