This specific Antonovka apple tree is my favorite from an orchard of over 60 heirloom varieties on our friends farm. The Antonovka apple tree is to Eastern Europe what Cox Orange Pippin is to England the most sought after apple in the region. When fully ripe it is great for fresh eating. Baking with Antonovka apples are superior since it retains high acidity. This high acidity (tart) compliments the intense sweetness. When not fully ripe it can be sour, it has to be yellow, not green for fresh eating. The Antonovka apple is also a very attractive fruit as it hangs delicately from the tree reminiscent of luminescent yellow lanterns. This also happens to grow true from seed, which means a planted seed from an Antonovka apple will produce a tree of that same variety. The Antonovka apple tree is also disease resistant. Our trees range in height from 4-8 ft. in our field and trimmed to 4 to 5 ft. when shipped. Our young two year trees are most often feathered (side limbs). The trees diameter (caliper) is often 1/2 to 3/4 inch; *As noted by University of California Scientists and other qualified professionals the most successful trees often have caliper from 1/2" to 5/8" and usually establish faster than smaller and larger planting stock. .
Basic idea for Pruning: Most fruit trees should be pruned in frost-free periods mid to late winter. (apricots best after bud break) Remove most vertical branches and shorten side branches. Fruiting wood is best on horizontal to 45 degree limbs. Learn more...
