Feijoas

Feijoas, commonly called pineapple guava, are evergreen shrubs or small trees native to South America, prized for their edible, egg-shaped fruits that offer a distinctive sweet and aromatic flavor reminiscent of pineapple, strawberry, or guava. Cultivated in many subtropical regions, feijoas are valued not only for their flavorful fruit but also for their attractive foliage and striking red and white edible flowers, making them excellent as durable hedges or privacy screens. The fruit ripens in autumn, featuring green skin and juicy flesh with a clear, gelatinous seed pulp. Feijoas require at least 50 hours of winter chilling to produce fruit and tolerate frost, partial shade, drought, and saline soils, though extreme heat and water stress may reduce fruit yield. Consistent watering during fruit maturation is important to optimize flavor and quality.
