In 1892 a handful of Persian walnut seedling trees were planted in Napa County that were purchased from Felix Gillet, California nurseryman who brought many valuable plants from France. John Hartley purchased the farm with those walnut seedlings in 1909. By that time the seedlings were 17-year-old trees bearing large crops of walnuts. Pleased with the consistent quality and quantity of the trees and their crops, Hartley decided to exhibit the walnuts in the Panama Pacific International Exposition held in San Francisco in 1915. “The judges awarded a medal to Mr. and Mrs. Hartley for the exceptional quality of this variety. The Hartley walnut is a thin shelled walnut, high quality with sweet kernel. Most folks agree this is the best walnut for eating fresh. Consistent, dependable variety making it a long sought after nut in California. Less susceptible to coddling moth and blight. Hartley walnut is an earlier blooming variety, so plant where late frost is not a perennial concern.

Our trees range in height from 4-8 ft. in our field and trimmed to 4 to 5 ft. when shipped. Our young two year trees are most often feathered (side limbs). The trees diameter (caliper) is often 1/2 to 3/4 inch; *As noted by University of California Scientists and other qualified professionals the most successful trees often have caliper from 1/2" to 5/8" and usually establish faster than smaller and larger planting stock. .

Trees are shipped with your invoice and helpful planting directions. There is no minimum quantity required but shipping rate for an individual tree is expensive since UPS/Fed Ex charge a dimensional weight and an additional handling fee to ship a tree.
