Continue ShoppingThe origins of Hyslop are unclear but it was recognized by the middle 1800's around Boston by the Hyslop family who helped develop the area. Beach's Apples of New York, 1905: "Fruit large, very brilliantly colored, dark red or purplish overspread with thick blue bloom; borne in clusters. The tree is a good grower, very hardy and a reliable cropper, yielding good crops biennially, or in some cases annually. It is desirable both for home use and for market." Hyslop crabapples have a sub-acid, astringent flavor best in cider blends. They are also known as being one of the best apples for jellies. The tree is quite attractive with blue tinged blossoms in the spring and brilliant red/purple large size crabapples in the fall. The Hyslop Crabapple does best with consistent thinning for good size.
